Fujifilm GFX 100 review - the best medium format camera ever?

  • Fuji has just unleashed the Fujifilm GFX 100 - a 100MP medium format mirrorless monster with 5-axis in-body image stabilization and crazy reliable autofocus.
    Just how good IS this camera? How does it stack up against the Phase One IQ4, the Hasselblad X1D II 50C, and the Fuji GFX 50R and 50S? Pretty bloody well, I'd say.

      @@Artaius A point that is important to me: I rarely use flash. Natural light shooting means high ISO IQ is important. The GFX100 just keeps going. AT ISO 6400 the quality is usable: comparable to the XT3 at 800. The PhaseOne is a magnificent camera and does many things well, but drops quality very quickly at higher ISOs.

    Except for this:

    Incredible review - maybe even better than the camera which I am now seriously considering. How is the AF and eye detect compared to the more recent Sony cameras? I have the A7RIII, A7III, and 6400 - and on all three it is fantastic.

    • @Artaius
      @Artaius  5 лет назад

      Thank you so much, Charles! :-) Fuji's eye detect is really, really good - I've been impressed with it ever since the latest firmware came out on the X-T3 and X-T30. But I think the Sony bodies are still the ones to beat - the animal eye AF can be a bit flaky, but for human subjects Sony is pretty rock solid.

    AF speed of GFX50 was literally as fast as AF of X-PRO1, meaning "yes, there is AF... sort of ... but, you may forget about dynamic scenes"! How come Fuji has gine a speed of AF in GFX-100 to the one that matches AF of XT3????

    • @Artaius

      By far my favourite Fuji lens is the GF 110mm f/2 (used in the video), which is about an 88mm equivalent in 35mm terms - just a gorgeous portrait lens. The GF 120mm f/4 Macro (95mm) is great as well, though like most macro lenses its rendering is probably too sharp for most portraits. Then there's the GF 32-64mm f/4 (25-51mm), which is the most popular lens with a nice focal range. Fuji does a great line of lenses!

  • @ricardorgomez
    @ricardorgomez 5 лет назад +1

    The Fuji does offer some cool features. But when I look at the images, I still felt the Hassy X1D II has a nicer look to me. 100MP is awesome. But I'd trade that for 50MP and nicer image quality. The Fuji images looked a bit flat to me. Probably due to the lenses. They definitely went the economy route there going with focal-plane shutter instead of leaf as in the Hassy. I understand the tradeoff.
    Excellent work!

    11:11 hey man... it is not really accurate to say you cannot afford one. we all have body parts, assets, and stuff we can sell just so we can buy one. The big concern isn't affording it, it is the price that we have to pay to afford it, and how will we deal with the disappointment when a 150MP version comes along with better IBIS sometime in 2026... :D

    • @Artaius

    If I heard correctly you said "ten thousand pound price tag". That would be $12,501. I ordered mine June 18 from an American store for $10,000 (minus five cents, I think it was). Hasn't been delivered, but credit card not charged. So you really pay a mark-up of 25% to get it in England? I recall when Brits would fly to the US to pick up cameras because the trip would in effect be free (don't know if they had to fool UK Customs).

    They need to get the medium format digital sensor sizes up to at least 6x4.5.... the difference is just way too marginal. And the 100mp is nothing compared to drumscans if you do prints. You still end up upscaling for even moderate sized prints.
    Its a start, but just needs much bigger sensors to be interesting.

    It is not medium format. Gfx100 is large format full-frame camera, and it is optimal for street photo, wedding, reportage, outdoor and so on. But fuji gf lenses are crap. Bad iq, clumsy, heavy, slow autofocus, over-priced. Real medium format lenses are better, lighter and not expensive. And any of them can be used on gfx with Tilt-shift adapter.
